What is Fissure?
Ever so often a fissure is mistaken for piles. Fissures can occur in anyone, but are more common among middle aged and young adults.
Fissure is a tear or ulcer in the lining of the anal canal which could cause bleeding . Anal fissures usually extend from the anal opening and are usually located in the posterior midline. Superficial or shallow anal fissures look much like a paper cut.
Types
Anal fissures are either acute or chronic.
Acute fissures occur with a sudden onset and heal within 2 weeks
Chronic anal fissures generally fail to heal within 8 weeks.
Anal fissures can also be defined by location. Most of these are located at the back (known as posteriorly), although they can also be located at the front (anteriorly) or at the sides

Fissure Causes
Fissures can be caused by constipation or by forcing a hard bowel movement through the anus, during childbirth, or ulceration of hemorrhoids. Signs and symptoms of an anal fissure include:
Pain during bowel movements Pain after bowel movements lasting up to several hours Bright red blood on the stool or toilet paper after a bowel movement Itching or irritation around the anus A visible crack in the skin around the anus A small lump or skin tag on the skin near the anal fissure |
